Péniche, Résidence universitaire A’Docks / Le Havre, 2013
The university residency A'Docks, in Le Havre, which is made of shipping containers is a first in France. This innovative and experimental architectural project, is signed by Cattani Architects Atelier.
Conscious of living a unique experience, eight students and residents wanted to invest and commit to promote collective and social life in the residency. In fact a common living area was the missing midpoint.
They therefore took the initiative to commission a designer who would fill this gap with the help of the "Nouveaux Commanditaires" of the Fondation de France.
Péniche is a space that includes a container and its surrounding. It found inspiration in the maritime world and the industrial landscapes of the area. A blue porch roof covers two containers and delimits a terrace with two large tables and their respective benches. Like a pontoon, the exterior wooden flooring welcomes visitors to board in the container which has new and soft lines. The vaulted ceiling evokes a boat's hull, the inside of a barge or a train ... At the end of the common room, a long table is surrounded by a bench which occupies the whole space and refers to a boat interior.
Both sculptural and functional, simple but singular, this setup meets the initial willingness to make coexist contemporary creation and social cohesion.
This project was created with the support of the CROUS Rouen Haute-Normandie, the CNOUS, the city of Le Havre, the Fondation de France, the association Concrete in collaboration with Artconnexion and the company sponsorship from Le Havre : ARC / Atelier de Réparation de Conteneurs.
La résidence universitaire A’Docks au Havre réalisée à partir de conteneurs de transport maritime est une première en France. Ce projet architectural, innovant et expérimental, est signé par l'Atelier Cattani Architectes.
Conscients de vivre une expérience singulière, huit étudiants et résidants ont souhaité s’investir et s’engager pour favoriser la vie collective et sociale au sein de la cité. Un espace de vie en commun leur faisait en effet défaut.
Aussi ont-ils pris l’initiative de passer commande auprès d'un designer afin de répondre à ce besoin grâce à l’action des Nouveaux Commanditaires de la Fondation de France.
Intitulé Péniche, cet espace investit un conteneur et son extérieur en s'inspirant du monde maritime et du paysage industriel qui entoure la résidence.
Un auvent bleu enveloppe deux conteneurs et délimite une terrasse composée de deux grandes tables et de leurs bancs respectifs. A l'image d'un ponton, le parquet extérieur embarque les visiteurs dans le conteneur aux lignes adoucies. Le plafond voûté évoque tour à tour la coque d'un bateau, l'intérieur d'une péniche ou d'un train... Au fond du conteneur, une longue table est bordée d'une banquette occupant tout l'espace et rappelant l'aménagement d'un "carré bateau".
À la fois sculpturale et fonctionnelle, simple mais singulière, cette installation répond à la volonté initiale de faire cohabiter création contemporaine et lien social.
Ce projet a vu le jour grâce au soutien du CROUS Rouen Haute-Normandie, du CNOUS, de la Ville du Havre, de la Fondation de France et de l'association Concrete en collaboration avec Artconnexion ainsi que du mécénat de l’entreprise havraise : ARC / Atelier de Réparation de Conteneurs.
